Charleston, WV – The National Weather Service in Charleston is warning residents of a two-part winter storm lasting through Friday, with blizzard conditions already developing in the higher elevations of northern and central West Virginia and a second wave of snow set to arrive late Thursday night into Friday morning.
According to the NWS, strong winds and heavy snow continue across the Allegheny Mountains, where blizzard conditions have reduced visibility to near zero in exposed areas such as Snowshoe, Elkins, and Harman. Lower elevations are seeing lighter snow totals of 1 to 3 inches, while mountain areas could exceed 8 inches by Thursday morning.
A brief lull is expected Thursday afternoon before another system spreads 1–4 inches of additional snow into the Mid-Ohio Valley and Tri-State region, including Huntington and Charleston, by early Friday. Some areas in southern West Virginia may see rain mixing with snow during the day Friday.
Forecasters advise allowing extra travel time for the Friday morning commute, with slick roads possible across much of the state. Motorists should use caution and monitor updates from 511WV for the latest travel and road conditions.
