West Virginia – Wet pavement glistens under streetlights this New Year’s morning as snow mixes with rain across central and southern parts of the state. In Charleston, flakes thicken at times, reducing visibility and making roads slick just as early travel begins.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected across parts of central, northern, and southern West Virginia, including Kanawha County. Snow may briefly mix with rain, but colder air keeps surfaces icy, especially on untreated roads.
Charleston Yeager Airport reported temperatures near 34 degrees early, with light rain falling and wind chills in the upper 20s. That combination raises concerns for slushy buildup and isolated icy patches on bridges and elevated roadways. Drivers along I-64, I-77, and U.S. 119 should plan extra time and reduce speeds through the morning hours.
Snow showers gradually taper by late morning, but lingering moisture could refreeze as temperatures dip later. While skies trend quieter tonight, colder air settles in quickly. Lows fall into the upper 20s, setting the stage for black ice where melting occurs during the day.
Friday brings partial sunshine and calmer weather, with highs near 41. Conditions improve for travel, though shaded roads may stay slick early. Saturday introduces another chance for light rain or snow during the day before colder air returns Saturday night. Sunday turns brighter but colder, keeping winter firmly in place to start 2026.
Emergency managers urge caution through the morning commute and remind residents to check road conditions before heading out. More advisories remain possible if temperatures drop faster than expected.
