Charleston, West Virginia – Thunderstorms could rattle Charleston commuters by 8 a.m. Tuesday, with downpours likely along I-64 and across Kanawha County. Localized flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas, as rainfall rates increase during the morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Tuesday begins with a 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms, with precipitation possibly extending into Tuesday night. Rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch are expected, with higher totals under stronger storms. The biggest threat? Flooding from slow-moving cells that could drench roadways during peak morning travel.

Drivers should use caution Tuesday morning, especially near the Kanawha River and on stretches of I-77 and I-64 where water tends to pool. Winds remain light, but wet roads could reduce visibility and reaction time. If water covers the road, turn around — don’t risk it.

By Wednesday, calmer weather returns. Sunshine dominates much of the midweek pattern, with highs in the upper 80s and low humidity. Fourth of July celebrations across Charleston and surrounding counties are on track for dry, sunny skies — a relief after a stormy start to the week.
