Charleston, West Virginia – Thunderstorms could soak parts of Charleston and southern West Virginia by Tuesday night, bringing a risk of localized flooding and travel delays as the workweek begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase late Monday night into Tuesday, with a 90% chance of rain Tuesday and Tuesday night. Southeast winds of 6 to 9 mph will bring moisture-rich air, and new rainfall totals between three-quarters and one inch are possible. A few stronger storms may also produce lightning and heavy downpours.

Rainfall could create high water issues along low-lying roads and creeks, especially near the I-64 corridor, Route 60, and Route 119. Residents in flood-prone areas should remain alert and avoid driving through standing water. If flooding develops, delays on secondary roads may impact commutes into Charleston and surrounding counties including Kanawha, Putnam, Cabell, and Boone.

After Tuesday, the region remains locked in a wet pattern through Saturday. Rain chances range from 30% to 60% mid-to-late week. While severe storms are not currently forecast, repeated rainfall may lead to saturated ground and renewed water concerns.
