Charleston, W.Va. – A cold front sliding southeast across West Virginia Wednesday is bringing rounds of showers and thunderstorms, raising the risk of flash flooding by late afternoon and evening. The heaviest storms are expected in southern counties, where repeated downpours could quickly overwhelm creeks, streams, and low-lying roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rainfall chances rise sharply after noon, with areas like Beckley, Bluefield, and Logan facing the greatest storm potential into the night. Flash flooding will be most likely if storms repeatedly track over the same locations, especially along small streams and poor-drainage areas.

Travel may be difficult on routes including I-64, I-77, and U.S. 19 where heavy rain could cause ponding. Drivers are urged to avoid high water and prepare for sudden detours. Local emergency management officials also advise residents in flood-prone areas to keep phones charged and remain alert for possible flash flood warnings.

Storm chances taper off early Thursday as the front exits into Virginia, but unsettled conditions linger into the weekend. Additional weather alerts could be issued if flooding develops.
