West Virginia wakes up to bright skies and a brisk chill, but change is already building on the horizon. Clouds are increasing across the Charleston area late this morning, and wet pavement is likely by daybreak Sunday as a strong system pushes east.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, today stays dry with a high near 56 degrees and light winds. Rain develops after 3 a.m. Sunday, and precipitation chances jump to 90 percent through the day. Between a quarter and half an inch of rain could fall across Kanawha County, with steady showers impacting I-64, I-77 and Route 119 through the afternoon.

Plan extra travel time Sunday. Roads may turn slick during heavier bursts of rain. Ponding is possible in low-lying spots, especially near creeks and poor drainage areas. While temperatures remain above freezing, early morning drivers should still watch for patchy slick spots where water lingers.

Sunday’s high reaches near 47 degrees before clouds hold firm Sunday night with lows in the mid-30s. President’s Day brings a welcome shift. Sunshine returns with highs near 58 degrees, and temperatures continue climbing into the mid-60s by Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s well above average for mid-February.

Meteorologists are also tracking a national warming trend heading into late next week. Highs could run 10 to 20 degrees above seasonal norms across much of the central and eastern U.S., hinting at early spring vibes.
