Pittsburgh Region – Life-threatening cold conditions continue across eastern West Virginia as dangerously low wind chills persist in higher elevations through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. EST Thursday for Eastern Tucker County. The warning includes the communities of Davis, Canaan Valley, and Thomas, as well as surrounding high-elevation terrain where exposure risks are greatest.

Forecasters say wind chill values could drop as low as 25 degrees below zero, with the coldest conditions expected early Thursday morning. In the highest elevations of the region, wind chills could briefly approach 30 below zero, increasing the danger for anyone outdoors.

These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite, which can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Hypothermia is also a concern during prolonged exposure, particularly for outdoor workers, winter recreationists, and motorists traveling through mountainous areas.

Travel along mountain roadways such as WV Route 32 and U.S. Route 48 may become more hazardous due to the combination of extreme cold and potential vehicle issues. Drivers who experience breakdowns or delays in remote areas could face rapid heat loss, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

In addition to personal safety concerns, officials warn that extended periods of freezing temperatures may lead to ruptured water pipes in homes and businesses, particularly in poorly insulated structures. Residents are encouraged to take steps to protect plumbing systems and ensure adequate heating.

The National Weather Service urges anyone who must go outdoors to dress in multiple layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Limiting time outside and ensuring access to warm shelter are strongly recommended during the warning period.
