Charleston, W.Va. – Strong storms could develop within hours late Thursday, bringing the risk of damaging winds and heavy rainfall across much of West Virginia before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a few thunderstorms may become strong to severe ahead of a cold front arriving late Thursday into Thursday night. The greatest risk will develop during the evening hours, particularly across central and northern parts of the state, including Charleston, Parkersburg, and Clarksburg.

While confidence in widespread severe weather remains limited due to the late timing, any storms that form could produce gusty winds and intense downpours. Localized flash flooding is possible, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas where water can accumulate quickly.

Drivers along Interstate 64, Interstate 77, and Route 50 should prepare for sudden reductions in visibility and water-covered roads during heavier showers. Outdoor plans Thursday evening may be impacted as storms move through.

Residents should stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts through Thursday night. Conditions are expected to improve later overnight as the cold front moves out of the region, but additional updates may be issued if storm intensity increases.
