Charleston, WV – A strong cold front will move across West Virginia on Sunday, bringing the potential for damaging winds and isolated thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Forecasters say showers will develop Sunday morning and intensify through the afternoon as the front pushes east. Gusty southwest winds ahead of the front and a sharp wind shift behind it could produce damaging gusts exceeding 45 mph in some areas.

The highest risk zones for strong winds and possible severe weather include Charleston, Beckley, Clarksburg, and Elkins, with widespread rain chances peaking between noon and 6 p.m. Sunday. While the overall thunderstorm threat remains limited, isolated storms could bring localized wind damage or brief power outages.

Drivers are urged to use caution, especially on elevated or exposed roadways, where crosswinds may impact high-profile vehicles. Residents should secure outdoor decorations, trash bins, and lightweight structures ahead of the storm system.

Conditions will gradually improve overnight Sunday into early Monday as cooler, drier air moves into the region. Temperatures early next week are expected to fall into the 40s and 50s under mostly clear skies.
