Charleston, West Virginia – Drivers across West Virginia are facing rapidly changing road conditions today as snow showers, isolated snow squalls, and strong winds combine to create dangerous travel from morning through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow showers began this morning and will continue into the mid-evening hours, tapering from west to east. Locally heavy snow squalls are possible, capable of causing sudden drops in visibility and quickly slick roads, even in lower elevations. Snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected in the mountains, while lighter coatings of up to 2 inches are possible in the lowlands.

Strong winds are adding to the hazard. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected across much of the state, with stronger gusts along the higher ridges where a Wind Advisory is in effect. These gusts may lead to blowing snow, downed tree limbs, and isolated power outages, especially in northeast mountain counties.

Impacts are expected along major routes including Interstate 64, Interstate 79, Interstate 77, and U.S. Route 33, particularly near mountain passes and bridges. Sidewalks, overpasses, and untreated roads could become slick with little warning.

Drivers are urged to slow down immediately if visibility drops, delay travel if possible during heavier squalls, and use headlights in snow showers. Snow showers gradually diminish tonight, but cold and blustery conditions will linger into early Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if squalls intensify.
