Rainelle, West Virginia – Drivers in western Greenbrier County should prepare for slick and hazardous roads beginning Wednesday afternoon as snow and gusty winds move into the region, creating difficult travel conditions through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from late Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday afternoon for western Greenbrier County. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected in communities including Rainelle, Quinwood, and Duo. Wind gusts up to 45 mph could cause blowing snow, further reducing visibility on open and elevated roadways.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick quickly after snow begins, with the most hazardous conditions expected during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of brief power outages and blocked roads in rural areas.
Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. West Virginia transportation officials recommend checking 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out. Snow is expected to taper Thursday afternoon, but lingering slick spots may remain on shaded roads and higher elevations.
