Charleston, WV – West Virginians should prepare for a dramatic shift in weather later this week as a cold front moves in, bringing the season’s first snow. Rain showers will dominate Tuesday before temperatures drop sharply, transitioning to a wintry mix by Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is expected to begin Tuesday morning, with precipitation intensifying throughout the day. Highs will reach the upper 60s on Tuesday before cooler air filters in overnight. By Wednesday, light showers will continue, followed by significantly colder temperatures. Areas near I-64 and higher elevations should expect accumulating snow starting Thursday morning, with up to an inch possible by nightfall.

Gusty winds accompanying the cold front will make travel hazardous, especially along I-64. Officials urge residents to monitor weather updates and prepare vehicles for winter driving conditions. If heading into higher elevations, pack emergency supplies, including blankets and water.

By Friday, temperatures will hover in the low 40s, with lingering rain and snow showers in the morning. Conditions will gradually clear by the weekend, but chilly weather will persist. Residents should take precautions for freezing overnight lows, which are expected to dip below freezing starting Thursday night.

This week’s first snowfall marks a turning point toward winter conditions in Charleston and surrounding areas. Stay informed and plan ahead for changing weather.
