Charleston, WV – A severe weather threat is developing for West Virginia as a cold front approaches, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the state on Thursday, April 10. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected, localized heavy rain and strong storms could cause issues for several areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the first round of storms is expected to hit early in the morning, with additional activity possible during the late afternoon and evening. Severe storms are capable of producing damaging winds and hail, along with heavy rain that could lead to localized flash flooding.

The most significant risk for severe weather will impact northeastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, and southern West Virginia, with the greatest threat for storms reaching areas such as Charleston, Clarksburg, and Huntington. Other areas throughout the state, including Snowshoe and Sutton, may experience lighter impacts.

The NWS is advising residents to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, as conditions may change quickly. While confidence in the timing and intensity of storms is increasing, some uncertainty remains about the exact locations most at risk.
