Charleston, West Virginia – A quick swing in weather is setting up for the Kanawha Valley as rain moves in tonight, followed by a brief shot of colder air and a chance for light snow on Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, rain develops overnight with temperatures falling into the low 30s by early morning. Roads across Charleston, South Charleston, and surrounding communities could be wet for the Thursday night and early Friday commute, especially along Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 119. Winds increase Friday, with gusts over 30 mph possible as colder air moves in behind the system.
By Friday morning, rain may briefly mix with or change to snow, mainly during the late morning hours. Any snow accumulation is expected to be light, but drivers should remain alert for slick spots as temperatures hover near freezing. Conditions improve by Friday night, with skies clearing and lows dipping into the mid-20s.
The weekend brings quieter weather, with sunshine returning Saturday and temperatures rebounding into the 50s before cooling again Sunday. Looking ahead to the holiday, Christmas Eve on Wednesday is shaping up milder and mainly dry across Charleston and central West Virginia, offering favorable conditions for travel and last-minute preparations. While early-week rain chances remain possible, no significant hazards are expected at this time, and additional updates will be issued if conditions change.
