Elkins, West Virginia – Roads across the higher elevations of Randolph, Pocahontas, Webster and surrounding counties could turn slick before daybreak Wednesday as freezing drizzle and light snow move in by 3 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for Southeast Webster, Northwest Pocahontas, Northwest Randolph and Southeast Randolph counties. Snow accumulations will remain light, up to 1 inch, but ice accretion of a few hundredths of an inch combined with wind gusts up to 40 mph could create hazardous travel.

The greatest impacts are expected during the Wednesday morning commute, particularly along higher routes near Snowshoe Mountain, Harman and Elkins. Elevated roadways, bridges and untreated secondary roads may glaze over quickly as freezing drizzle develops before steadier precipitation arrives.

Gusty winds could also reduce visibility in exposed areas and create drifting in higher terrain.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check West Virginia 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling. Conditions should gradually improve after 3 p.m., though slick spots may linger into the evening as temperatures hover near freezing. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
