Charleston, West Virginia – A quick-moving cold front is bringing a few light showers to parts of West Virginia this morning, but drier conditions will settle in by this afternoon before a much wetter pattern develops late this week and into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, scattered light showers may linger early today as the front exits the region, followed by improving conditions and a dry afternoon. High temperatures will climb into the upper 40s and 50s across much of the state, including Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and Beckley, remaining above normal for early January.

The break in dry weather will be short-lived. Forecasters say rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected to move into the region beginning Thursday night and continuing into the weekend. While exact rainfall totals are still being refined, the prolonged nature of the rain could lead to wet roads, ponding in low-lying areas, and rising creeks and streams, especially in the mountains.

Travel impacts may increase late Thursday night into Friday along major corridors such as I-64, I-77, and Route 119, where visibility could drop during heavier rain. Residents are encouraged to monitor local conditions and clear storm drains ahead of the wetter stretch.

Above-normal temperatures are expected to persist through the end of the week, keeping precipitation in the form of rain. Additional updates or advisories may be issued as the heavier rainfall approaches and confidence in impacts increases.
