Charleston, W.Va. – Sunshine will give way to stormy skies by midweek, with Charleston and much of West Virginia bracing for thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service warns that showers and thunderstorms could develop after 2 p.m. Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and lightning to parts of Kanawha County and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rainfall totals could reach up to a quarter-inch in most areas, though isolated spots may see heavier downpours. The storm threat continues into Wednesday night, with showers possible until 2 a.m. Roads along I-64 and U.S. 60 may become slick during the evening commute, raising travel risks.

Thursday brings another round of unsettled weather, with a 30% chance of storms into the evening before skies clear overnight. Conditions improve Friday, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 88 degrees. The weekend, however, may see more scattered storms, particularly Saturday afternoon.

Residents are urged to keep devices charged in case of power interruptions and avoid outdoor activities when thunder is heard. More advisories could follow if storm cells strengthen.
