Charleston, West Virginia – Dangerous heat is set to blanket much of West Virginia, southern Ohio, and northeastern Kentucky, with heat index values pushing 100 degrees by Monday afternoon. Residents from Charleston and Huntington to Parkersburg and Ashland should prepare for oppressive conditions, especially between noon and 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a surge of temperatures into the low 90s, paired with high humidity, will combine for sweltering “feels like” temperatures across the tri-state region. Counties including Kanawha, Cabell, Jackson (WV), and Boyd (KY), as well as the cities of Athens, Ironton, and Clarksburg, are all under this special weather statement through the evening.

Outdoor workers and anyone with recreation plans are urged to drink plenty of fluids, take frequent breaks, and stay out of direct sunlight during peak heat hours. Local health officials also recommend checking on seniors, neighbors without air conditioning, and pets.

Hydrate often, avoid strenuous activity if possible, and seek out air-conditioned spaces. This marks one of the hottest spells so far this July, with conditions similar to last summer’s early July heat wave. Road crews, utility workers, and event organizers should take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The heat advisory remains in effect through Monday evening. Additional alerts are possible if high humidity persists into Tuesday.
