Charleston, WV – A Spring frost advisory will bring chilly conditions to Charleston early Thursday morning, but the bigger threat looms later. Thunderstorms are expected Saturday and could bring heavy rain, wind, and hazardous travel across West Virginia through Easter weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, temperatures may drop to 33°F between midnight and 9 a.m. Thursday, prompting a Frost Advisory for portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, and central to western West Virginia. Sensitive plants should be covered or moved indoors to prevent frost damage.

Saturday poses a different risk. A weather system moving into the region will bring a 70% chance of showers and potential thunderstorms by afternoon. Winds may also increase, creating slick roads—especially along major routes like I-64 and I-77—during one of the busiest spring weekends.

Looking ahead to the 5-day extended forecast:

  • Thursday (April 17): Sunny with frost in the morning, high near 68°F.
  • Friday (April 18): Mostly sunny, warmer, high around 82°F.
  • Saturday (April 19): Rain likely, possibly thunderstorms by afternoon, high near 80°F.
  • Sunday (Easter, April 20): 30% chance of showers before noon, partly sunny with a high of 75°F.
  • Monday (April 21): Partly sunny with continued storm chances, high near 77°F.
