Charleston, WV – Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are posing a significant flood threat across West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, and northeastern Kentucky through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.

According to the NWS, an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain is forecast along and west of the Ohio River, with the heaviest accumulation expected in southeastern Ohio and northeastern Kentucky. Isolated areas could see even higher totals due to repeated thunderstorms. Elsewhere, 1 to 2 inches is expected across the region.

Localized flooding remains a concern, especially in low-lying areas and communities near creeks or rivers. Emergency management officials urge residents to monitor flood alerts and avoid driving through water-covered roads.

Today’s storms may also bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a limited risk of tornadoes. Areas such as Charleston, Huntington, and Parkersburg in West Virginia are under heightened watch.

Travel disruptions, school delays, and potential power outages are possible through the weekend. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and prepare emergency kits in case of severe weather.

Storms are forecast to taper off by early Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to follow updates at weather.gov/rlx.
