Charleston, West Virginia – Flash flooding and severe thunderstorms are likely across much of West Virginia through Friday evening, with damaging winds and heavy downpours posing the biggest threats in cities like Huntington, Elkins, and Charleston.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, repeated rounds of strong to severe storms could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in areas that receive multiple inches of rain in short bursts. A marginal risk for severe weather and a slight risk for excessive rainfall are in effect across much of the state until late tonight.

Beckley, Parkersburg, and Sutton are all within the affected zones, with the potential for damaging wind gusts and small hail. Roadways could quickly become water-covered, especially in low-lying areas and near creeks or streams. Motorists are urged to avoid flood-prone routes and monitor for changing road conditions.

Residents should charge devices, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods. Emergency management officials warn that flash flooding can occur with little warning and advise staying tuned to local alerts.

Storm activity may continue into the early hours of Saturday. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storm cells stall or intensify.
