Charleston, WV – Travelers in central West Virginia woke to thick fog and cool air Monday morning, with visibility under half a mile in several valleys. The mist will lift by midmorning, revealing a mild, mostly sunny day ahead — but the calm start won’t last.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., followed by a noticeable warm-up as highs climb into the 60s by Tuesday. A developing system over the Midwest is expected to push heavy rain and gusty winds into the Kanawha Valley late Tuesday and Tuesday night. Rainfall could reach up to half an inch in spots, with locally heavier bursts possible during the evening commute.

By Wednesday, the front shifts east, bringing partial clearing and highs near 60°F before cooler, drier air moves in for Thanksgiving Day. Holiday travelers should plan for wet roads Tuesday night and early Wednesday, especially along I-64 and Route 119, where ponding and reduced visibility could cause slowdowns.

Thanksgiving itself should bring relief — sunny skies and highs in the lower 40s will make for crisp, dry conditions perfect for family gatherings or early shopping plans.

Five-Day Outlook for Charleston, WV:

  • Monday: Fog early, mostly sunny, high 61°F.
  • Tuesday: Rain develops, high 64°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 60°F.
  • Thanksgiving Day: Mostly sunny, high 41°F.
  • Friday: Partly cloudy, high 47°F.
