Charleston, WV – Storm chances are building across West Virginia this holiday weekend, with Charleston residents facing increased rain risk starting Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service, isolated showers could develop after 8 p.m. Sunday, followed by a stronger system moving in late Memorial Day. Rain is expected to intensify Monday night into Tuesday, with an 80% chance of showers that could affect travel on major routes like I-64 and U.S. 60.
Sunday will start pleasant, with highs near 68°F and light winds. But clouds will thicken through the day as moisture increases from the south. Drivers heading out Sunday night should watch for wet pavement and reduced visibility, especially in low-lying areas along the Kanawha River.
Memorial Day itself brings a mix of sun and clouds, with highs near 74°F before a 40% chance of evening showers moves in. Families planning outdoor activities should have rain gear ready and check for last-minute updates before heading out.
The wet pattern ramps up Tuesday and lingers through midweek. Rain chances hit 80% Tuesday night and stay elevated into Wednesday, when storms could bring over a half-inch of rainfall. Flash flooding isn’t expected yet, but standing water may become a concern in flood-prone zones.
Looking ahead: Temperatures climb toward summer levels by Thursday, with highs in the upper 70s and a continued chance of afternoon storms.
