Canaan Valley, WV – A long-duration period of strong winds is expected across the high terrain of Eastern Tucker County beginning tonight, as the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh says a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 7 PM this evening through 10 AM Monday.

According to the Weather Service, west winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph, will impact the region for more than 36 hours—especially on ridges above 3,500 feet near Canaan Valley, Thomas and Davis. The extended wind event will develop tonight, peak late Sunday into early Monday, and gradually taper off by mid-morning Monday.

Forecasters warn the combination of persistent wind and elevation will lead to hazardous conditions along exposed ridges and open terrain. Tree limbs may come down, unsecured outdoor items may be blown around, and scattered power outages are possible across remote mountain communities.

Travelers on high-elevation roads—including routes near Canaan Valley Resort, Timberline, Blackwater Falls and surrounding ridge-top corridors—should prepare for periods of strong crosswinds, especially from late Saturday night through Sunday evening. High-profile vehicles may experience the most difficulty.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations, trash cans, equipment and seasonal items before winds intensify tonight. The Weather Service recommends monitoring updated forecasts throughout the weekend as conditions evolve.

Wind speeds will slowly diminish after sunrise Monday, though breezy weather may persist into midday as the storm system exits.
