West Virginia – Sunshine and mild air are giving way to a soaking setup, and rain will begin spreading into Charleston by late Thursday night, setting up a wet and slower Friday commute. Roads are dry now, but that will change quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a 50% chance of rain develops Thursday with highs near 77°F and gusts up to 24 mph. Rain becomes likely late Thursday night, increasing to a 90% chance Friday with steady rainfall and highs near 59°F.

Across Charleston, South Charleston, and Kanawha County, drivers along I-64, I-77, and US-119 should expect slick pavement and reduced visibility by early Friday. Ponding water may develop in low-lying areas during steadier rain. Plan extra time for the morning commute.

Today remains pleasant with highs near 70°F and light winds, offering a brief break before clouds increase. By Thursday night, showers become more widespread, and conditions may deteriorate quickly after midnight.

Rain continues through Friday before tapering off late. Behind the system, temperatures drop sharply into the upper 20s Friday night. That could lead to isolated slick spots early Saturday if moisture lingers on untreated surfaces.

The weekend turns brighter but cooler. Saturday brings sunshine with highs near 52°F, followed by a milder Sunday near 64°F under clear skies.

Looking ahead, early next week trends warmer with highs returning to the mid-60s, though another round of showers may arrive by Tuesday.

If you’re commuting Friday morning, will wet roads slow you down?
