Charleston, West Virginia – Snow will begin coating roads across central West Virginia this evening, with slick conditions developing before midnight and lasting into the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, light snow showers will expand across Taylor, Upshur, Barbour, Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas and Randolph counties through the evening hours, continuing into the first half of Thursday. Most communities can expect 1 to 4 inches of accumulation, with occasional moderate bursts reducing visibility and briefly intensifying snowfall rates overnight.
Higher elevations near Snowshoe, Marlinton and Harman could see roads turn snow-covered quickly, especially along Route 219, Route 33 and Route 55. In Elkins, Buckhannon and Grafton, untreated secondary roads and bridges may become slick as temperatures hover near freezing. Drivers along U.S. 19 near Summersville and Route 20 through Webster Springs should prepare for reduced visibility at times.
The West Virginia Division of Highways is expected to treat priority routes, but snowfall rates may briefly outpace treatment overnight. Allow extra travel time, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking on hills and curves.
Snow showers will gradually taper late Thursday morning, though slick spots may persist where temperatures remain near 32 degrees. Additional statements could be issued if snowfall rates increase
