Snowshoe, West Virginia – Snow-covered mountain roads and wind gusts up to 50 mph are creating hazardous travel across parts of eastern West Virginia early Wednesday, with slick conditions expected to persist through the midday hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Wednesday for Northwest Pocahontas and Southeast Randolph counties, including Snowshoe and Harman. Additional snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches are expected, with localized totals nearing 6 inches in higher elevations.

Snowfall combined with wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph will blow snow across exposed stretches of Route 219 and secondary mountain roads. Visibility may drop suddenly in heavier bursts, especially along ridge tops and open terrain. Gusty winds could also snap small tree branches, leading to isolated debris on roadways.

Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check West Virginia 511 for updated road conditions before traveling. Those heading into higher elevations should prepare for rapidly changing visibility and snow-packed pavement.

Snow intensity should taper by early afternoon, but lingering slick spots may continue beyond 1 p.m. Additional updates are possible if bands redevelop.
