West Virginia wakes up to damp pavement and a milder breeze, but steadier February rain is lining up by midday. Showers increase through the afternoon, and by Thursday some communities could measure 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, enough to pond on roads and swell creeks. Drivers along I-64 and I-77 should plan extra time as visibility drops in heavier bursts.

According to the National Weather Service, a strengthening system will spread widespread rain across the state through Thursday, with showers likely by late Wednesday and periods of steadier rainfall into Thursday afternoon. Precipitation chances climb to 70 to 90 percent, especially south and east of Charleston. Temperatures stay unusually mild, rising into the mid to upper 60s before cooling late week.

Charleston reaches the low 60s today with calm winds turning southwest. Showers become more numerous Wednesday, and a rumble of thunder is possible Thursday afternoon. Rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter inch are likely at first, but higher amounts could fall in heavier cells. Low-lying roads and poor drainage areas may flood quickly. Keep phones charged and avoid driving through water-covered pavement.

Higher elevations across the mountains could mix with wet snow as cooler air filters in by Thursday night. Slick patches may develop where water refreezes after sunset, especially on bridges and shaded roads. Watch for flash freezing if temperatures dip near 32 degrees.

Beyond midweek, rain chances linger into Friday before drier, cooler air arrives. The 6–10 day outlook signals a warming trend heading into late February, with above-normal temperatures building by early next week. Spring warmth is on the horizon. Traveling later this week?
