Charleston, West Virginia – Steady rain is sweeping across West Virginia right now, and temperatures are set to fall fast enough to bring a freeze risk before sunrise Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a cold front is moving through the region Friday, producing widespread showers with rain chances reaching near 100% through much of the day. Cities including Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley will see temperatures drop from the 50s into the mid-40s by late afternoon as the front pushes east.

Roads along I-64, I-77, and Route 19 will remain wet through the evening, increasing the risk of slick travel late. Rain tapers off later tonight, but colder air quickly moves in behind the system.

By early Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing across much of the state, with lows dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s. This could lead to patchy frost and icy spots on bridges and untreated roads, especially in higher elevations and rural areas.

Residents should use caution overnight and early Saturday, particularly on elevated surfaces, and protect sensitive plants from the cold.

The cold snap will be brief, with temperatures expected to rebound later this weekend, though additional weather systems could bring more rain early next week.
