Charleston, West Virginia – Strong storms could bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, and isolated power outages to southern West Virginia through 6 p.m. Friday as a severe thunderstorm watch blankets 12 counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 6 p.m. EDT for Boone, Fayette, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wayne, and Wyoming counties. The primary threats include 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail.

Storms may develop rapidly along U.S. Route 52, I-77, and I-64 corridors, potentially impacting afternoon travel and outdoor plans in cities like Beckley, Bluefield, and Logan. Local emergency management agencies urge residents to remain indoors if storms approach and to secure loose outdoor items.

Power outages and tree damage are possible in higher elevation areas. Residents should charge devices and monitor local alerts, especially in flood-prone zones where brief downpours may cause ponding.

This is the first widespread severe weather watch of May for southern West Virginia. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storm activity intensifies later today.
