Elkins, W.Va. – Gardeners and growers in the West Virginia highlands should take immediate precautions as temperatures are expected to drop near freezing overnight, threatening sensitive plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday across Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties, including cities such as Elkins, Snowshoe, Richwood, and Marlinton. Low temperatures could reach 33°F, leading to the formation of frost.

Residents in higher elevations, particularly around Holly River State Park and Cowen, are urged to cover or bring in vulnerable plants. Unprotected vegetation may be damaged or killed by the cold snap, which follows an unseasonably cool end to May.

While this advisory affects mostly rural mountain communities, the risk spans both northwest and southeast portions of each county. Drivers may also notice fog or patchy frost on early-morning roads.

The frost threat is expected to end by mid-morning Sunday, but the National Weather Service warns that additional advisories may follow if cool conditions persist into early next week.
