Charleston, W.Va. – Daily thunderstorms could bring localized flash flooding to West Virginia through Monday, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Sunday across central and southern parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, areas including Huntington, Beckley, and parts of the Kanawha Valley face a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall on Sunday. Both today and Monday remain under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4), but the threat of isolated flash flooding remains due to already saturated ground and repeated storms.

The pattern of daily showers and thunderstorms will impact major roadways like I-64 and Route 119, where downpours could reduce visibility and lead to quick ponding. Emergency managers advise avoiding flood-prone roads, charging phones in case of power outages, and securing loose outdoor items ahead of gusty winds or hail.

This unsettled stretch follows a wet start to June, and similar flash flooding was reported in parts of the state during last year’s summer storm surge.

Rain chances taper slightly after Monday, but additional advisories are possible depending on storm development.
