Charleston, W.Va. – Strong thunderstorms will sweep across southern West Virginia Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing a risk of damaging winds, hail, and localized flash flooding across key travel corridors and low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, areas under enhanced and slight risk include parts of northeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and southern West Virginia—especially around Beckley, Huntington, and Charleston. A Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight for these regions, with storms capable of dropping heavy rain in short bursts, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

Communities like Pikeville, Bluefield, and portions of the Coalfields may see storms with wind gusts over 50 mph and quarter-size hail. Localized tornado development is possible but not widespread. Officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads and heed the warning: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

On Wednesday, storm activity shifts northward, with marginal risks for damaging wind and heavy rain expanding into Clarksburg, Elkins, and Snowshoe. While threats are lower, flash flooding remains a concern.

The flood watch is expected to expire late Tuesday, but additional advisories may be issued depending on storm development overnight into Wednesday.
