Charleston, W.Va. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to push across much of West Virginia overnight, threatening strong winds, lightning, and hail through 5 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for 30 counties across the state, including Kanawha, Fayette, Raleigh, and Wood. The watch, issued late Friday, warns of conditions favorable for damaging winds up to 60 mph and isolated quarter-sized hail.

Counties under the watch stretch from McDowell and Mercer in the south to Harrison and Tyler in the north. Overnight travelers along I-64, I-77, and U.S. Route 50 should be alert for sudden downpours and poor visibility. Power outages are possible where trees or branches fall.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, avoid flooded roads, and keep mobile alerts on in case warnings are issued. If thunder roars, move indoors.

Storm activity is expected to taper off after sunrise, but the National Weather Service advises that additional watches or warnings may be issued if the system intensifies.
