CHARLESTON, WV – West Virginia residents are bracing for severe weather through the weekend, with thunderstorms and the potential for flooding in many areas. According to the National Weather Service, a series of storms are expected to bring heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and hail starting Friday night and continuing through Saturday.

The greatest risk for severe weather will occur Saturday into Saturday night, particularly for the middle Ohio Valley and areas of northern West Virginia, including the Huntington tri-state area. In addition to the storms, a flood watch is in effect for these regions, with some areas already having received up to 2 inches of rain. Forecasts predict that another 2 to 4 inches of rainfall could accumulate by Sunday morning, exacerbating flood risks.

A slight risk of excessive rainfall will also affect the Huntington and Tug Fork areas tonight, and the risk will spread to other areas throughout the weekend. Authorities are advising residents to monitor weather alerts and prepare for potential flooding. The National Weather Service also encourages having multiple ways to receive alerts and a plan in place should severe weather strike.
