West Virginia: Severe Thunderstorms Expected Today, Localized Tornado Threat

Charleston, WV – Residents are urged to stay alert as another round of showers and thunderstorms is anticipated this afternoon and evening. The storms, driven by a cold front, could be severe, bringing damaging winds and heavy downpours that may lead to flash flooding.

According to the US National Weather Service in Charleston, isolated severe storms are expected to develop along a stalled frontal boundary, with the first round of storms projected to begin early to mid-afternoon. Additional storm activity is expected to move through the region from late afternoon into the evening. Severe storms could produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flash flooding.

The National Weather Service has categorized the severe weather risk for today as “Marginal” (Level 1/5). Despite the marginal risk, all thunderstorms have the potential to produce deadly lightning, gusty winds, and small hail. There is also a localized tornado threat.

Today’s forecast predicts partly cloudy conditions early, with the likelihood of thunderstorms increasing as the day progresses. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 90°F with a low of 73°F. Residents are advised to stay weather aware and utilize multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

Looking ahead, the weather for Charleston will remain warm, with temperatures ranging from the high 80s to low 90s over the weekend. Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 88°F, while Sunday will see clear skies with a high of 89°F. The start of next week will bring even hotter temperatures, with highs reaching the low 90s on Monday and Tuesday.
