Charleston, WV – Freezing rain and light snow are expected to create hazardous driving conditions across parts of West Virginia today. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for southeast Webster, northwest Pocahontas, and Randolph counties until 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing drizzle could coat roads with a thin layer of ice during the morning and evening commutes. The slickest areas will likely be in the northeastern mountains, where up to an inch of wet snow is also possible. Commuters are urged to reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution, especially on bridges, overpasses, and curves.
Temperatures today will hover around 42°F, with calmer winds in the afternoon. Overnight, conditions are expected to clear slightly, dropping temperatures to 34°F with mostly cloudy skies. On Christmas Day, the forecast predicts highs near 48°F under partly sunny skies, offering a reprieve from today’s wintry mix.
Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will bring unseasonably warm temperatures, reaching highs of 55°F and 58°F, respectively, under mostly sunny skies. However, rain returns this weekend, with showers likely on Saturday and Sunday as temperatures climb into the low 60s.
Drivers traveling along key routes, such as I-79 and US-33, should remain vigilant today. Spotty ice may be difficult to detect in shaded areas or higher elevations. Stay updated with local weather reports and allow for delays during travel.
