Charleston, WV – Fall fire season officially began Wednesday across parts of the region, bringing with it a wave of new open burning restrictions that will impact residents through late fall.

According to the US National Weather Service Charleston WV, fire season rules are now in effect in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. The restrictions vary by state but are designed to prevent wildfires during one of the driest stretches of the year.

In Ohio, no open burning is permitted between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. from October 1 through November 30. West Virginia prohibits open burning between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from October 1 through December 31. Kentucky bans open burning from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. within 150 feet of woodland or brush land from October 1 through December 15. Meanwhile, in Virginia, no open burning is allowed from midnight to 4 p.m. between October 15 and November 30.

Officials warn that even small outdoor fires can quickly spread due to falling leaves, low humidity, and gusty autumn winds. Violating seasonal fire restrictions may lead to fines or legal penalties.

Residents are encouraged to check with local fire departments for any additional community-specific rules and to avoid outdoor burning when conditions are dry or windy.
