Maryland – Strong winds and mountain snow are impacting western Maryland and nearby areas this morning, creating hazardous travel and the potential for power outages.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected across wind advisory areas, with gusts near 60 mph in warned locations, especially during the morning hours. These winds may lead to downed trees and scattered power outages.

At the same time, snow and blowing snow combined with the strong winds are producing near-blizzard conditions in higher elevations along and west of the Allegheny Front. Snow-covered roadways and sharply reduced visibility are possible, particularly in exposed mountain areas.

Forecast snowfall totals are expected to reach 2 to 5 inches, with the highest accumulations in Garrett County, Maryland, and adjacent portions of eastern West Virginia, including areas near Oakland and Cumberland.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the mountain zones through this morning, while strong wind headlines cover a broader portion of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and parts of northern Virginia.

Travel through mountain passes and along ridgelines may be especially dangerous due to blowing snow, crosswinds, and falling tree debris. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for brief power disruptions.
