West Virginia I-81 Crash: Texas Man Killed After Wrong-Way Incident

Martinsburg, WV – A 25-year-old Texas man died late Tuesday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 81 Northbound in Berkeley County, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal incident occurred near the 8.5 mile marker around 11:59 p.m., when deputies responded to reports of a Chrysler Pacifica traveling the wrong direction in the northbound lanes. According to investigators, the vehicle crashed, and callers soon reported a man running along the highway.

Deputies arrived to find an unresponsive male, later identified as Christian Basil Sones, of Texas. Officials say Sones was struck by a tractor-trailer in the rightmost northbound lane and pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reported the investigation is being led by Deputy Milburn, a traffic crash reconstructionist. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
