Charleston, West Virginia – Dangerous heat will grip West Virginia through midweek, with heat index values climbing to 110°F across lowland areas by Sunday afternoon and remaining dangerously high through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories go into effect this afternoon, covering a large swath of the state and parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia. The hottest conditions are expected daily between 1 and 7 p.m., with minimal overnight relief as temperatures struggle to dip below the lower 70s.

Counties under warning include Kanawha, Cabell, Putnam, Raleigh, and Cabell, among others. Cities such as Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and Parkersburg are bracing for consecutive days with heat indices topping 105°F. Mountain areas will also see highs in the mid-90s.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, wear light clothing, and never leave pets or people in vehicles. Drink water frequently and check on vulnerable neighbors.

The heat dome may break slightly by Thursday, with scattered thunderstorms returning Wednesday. Until then, residents should prepare for prolonged dangerous conditions.
