Charleston, West Virginia – Triple-digit heat will grip the Ohio River Valley Thursday, with even more dangerous conditions expected by Friday. A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, with an Extreme Heat Watch issued for Friday as heat index values climb toward 108°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory covers parts of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky, and much of central and southern West Virginia—including Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and Athens, OH. Today’s heat index could reach 104°F, with Friday shaping up to be even hotter.
Cities like Gallipolis, Ripley, Logan, and St. Marys are expected to feel the brunt of this heat wave. The combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures will significantly raise the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Cooling centers may open in some counties if conditions worsen Friday.
This is the region’s most intense heat event of the summer so far and could rival similar July stretches seen in 2022.
The Extreme Heat Watch for Friday runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. More advisories may follow as the situation develops.
