Charleston, West Virginia – After a stretch of uncertainty, the rain threat across West Virginia has eased, and a slow-burning heatwave is gearing up to settle in through the weekend. While parts of the southern region could still see isolated showers this afternoon and again Thursday, most of the state will stay dry—and warm.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, highs in the lowlands will reach the upper 80s by Friday, with a more widespread surge into the 90s expected by Sunday. Mountain areas will stay cooler, with temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to low 80s through the end of the week.
Sunshine dominates Friday’s forecast, with partly cloudy skies today, Thursday, and Saturday. The slight risk for afternoon rain showers will remain confined mostly to southern counties like Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming. Drivers along US-52 and I-77 may encounter wet pavement during those isolated cells.
Residents should begin preparing now for the hotter stretch—stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and ensure air conditioning systems are in working order. Local cooling centers could open by the weekend if heat indices climb into the mid-90s.
The warming trend will hold into early next week, with additional advisories possible if humidity levels spike.
