Charleston, W.Va. – Residents across Charleston and much of western West Virginia will face sweltering conditions today as a dangerous heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday. Heat index values are expected to climb near 100 degrees, raising risks for heat-related illness, especially among vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory covers the Tri-State region, including Huntington, Charleston, and portions of southeast Ohio. Scattered thunderstorms are also possible this afternoon and evening as a cold front pushes through the area, which could provide some temporary relief but also bring lightning and heavy downpours.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water. Light, loose-fitting clothing is recommended, along with frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Emergency crews caution drivers never to leave children or pets inside parked cars, where temperatures can rise quickly to deadly levels.
Heat will remain a factor into early next week, though slightly cooler conditions and lower humidity are expected by Tuesday. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures climb again.
