Charleston, WV – A man wanted in West Virginia since 2020 has been captured in Chicago and extradited back to Kanawha County this week, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Timothy Lee Walding Jr., 46, had been on the run for more than five years after being linked to a carjacking and robbery in Dunbar, WV. On Tuesday, September 10, 2025, Walding was booked into South Central Regional Jail (SCRJ) in Charleston after being transported from Illinois.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Walding was first identified as a suspect in July 2020 following a carjacking on Wilson Street and an attempted escape from deputies later that same day. He was also considered a person of interest in an earlier robbery at a local business. At the time, officials warned he was “armed and dangerous.”

Jail records show Walding is being held without bond on federal charges, pending further court proceedings in Kanawha County.

“This arrest brings closure to a case that’s been open for more than five years,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “We appreciate the cooperation of agencies in Illinois that assisted in safely returning him to West Virginia.”

Walding faces multiple charges connected to the 2020 incidents. As with all criminal cases, the Sheriff’s Office noted that the allegations remain accusations, and Walding is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
