Charleston, WV – After a chilly start Thursday, high pressure is bringing dry and pleasant fall weather across much of West Virginia. However, residents in the northeast mountains should prepare for a sharp cooldown overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Watch remains in effect for portions of the northeast mountains late Thursday night into Friday morning. Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage sensitive plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing, especially in higher elevations.

Temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s to low 40s in mountain areas, with lowlands seeing mid-30s to 40s. Daytime highs Thursday will stay seasonably cool, ranging from the 50s to mid-60s in the mountains and 60s in lower elevations.

The weather service says seasonable and dry conditions will continue through the end of the week, offering a stretch of comfortable autumn weather. By early next week, however, a couple of weak systems could bring a chance of rain back to the region.

Residents are encouraged to cover or bring in plants and insulate outdoor plumbing ahead of tonight’s freeze risk.
