Charleston, WV – A soggy start to the week places the Kanawha Valley under a Flood Watch, with periods of heavy rain expected to create hazardous travel conditions. Residents face a continued threat of thunderstorms that will persist for several days. The active weather pattern could disrupt daily commutes and outdoor activities, including the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flood Watch remains in effect for the Charleston area until 10 p.m. Monday. There is an 80% chance of precipitation throughout the day. Heavy downpours embedded in these storms could lead to localized flooding. Drivers should use extreme caution on roadways prone to water collection.

Impacts could be felt across Kanawha County. Low-lying areas along Kanawha Boulevard and MacCorkle Avenue may see standing water. Motorists on Interstates 64 and 77 should remain vigilant for sudden changes in visibility and ponding on the pavement. Never attempt to drive through a flooded road.

The storm threat does not end Monday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely again Tuesday afternoon, with a 70% chance of rain. The unsettled weather continues into Wednesday. For Juneteenth on Thursday, celebrations could be impacted by a 90% chance of thunderstorms and a high temperature reaching 90 degrees. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions and have a backup plan for outdoor events.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the pattern finally breaks. Friday will become mostly sunny with a high near 86 degrees. Saturday brings even warmer and sunnier conditions, with a high of 92. Warnings remain in effect through Monday evening, and further advisories may be issued as the week progresses.
