Charleston, WV – A widespread flood watch remains in effect across West Virginia as heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms continue to impact the region through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, rainfall totals of up to 2 inches are expected across western and central counties, with the highest amounts forecast near Huntington, Jackson, and Grayson. Rain falling on already saturated ground may quickly lead to renewed flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, and small streams.

In addition to flood concerns, isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into the evening. These storms may produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and locally heavy downpours. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Counties including Charleston, Huntington, Logan, and Parkersburg are under a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms. Morning showers are not expected to be severe, but afternoon outflow boundaries may intensify storms later in the day.

Residents are advised to stay alert for weather warnings and avoid flood-prone roads. The National Weather Service urges the public to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” and to monitor updates at weather.gov/rlx.
