Charleston, WV – A Flood Watch is in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday afternoon for central and southern West Virginia, northeastern Kentucky, and southwestern Virginia. Heavy rain from showers and thunderstorms may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, WV, rainfall amounts between 0.75 to 1.5 inches are expected, with some areas seeing up to 2 inches in heavier downpours. The excessive rainfall could cause creeks and streams to rise rapidly, creating hazardous travel conditions and potential evacuations in flood-prone areas.
The watch includes major cities such as Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and Clarksburg, as well as numerous rural communities. The risk of landslides and debris flows is heightened in mountainous areas where saturated soil increases the chances of ground movement. Residents in these locations should monitor hillsides for leaning trees, unexpected water seepage, and shifting soil.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert for possible Flood Warnings, move to higher ground if needed, and avoid traveling through flooded roads. Additional updates can be found on the NWS Charleston website and social media pages.
