Charleston, WV – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday for parts of West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, and northeastern Kentucky due to dry conditions, gusty winds, and warm temperatures increasing the risk of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, the warning affects multiple counties, including Greenup, Carter, Boyd, and Lawrence in Kentucky; Perry, Athens, Jackson, and Lawrence in Ohio; and Wayne, Kanawha, Putnam, and several others in West Virginia. The combination of low humidity—dropping as low as 10 percent—along with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph and temperatures climbing to 85 degrees, creates dangerous fire conditions.
Officials warn that the dry fuels and strong winds could cause fires to ignite and spread quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure any items that may create sparks. Any fires that start could become difficult to control.
Fire weather conditions are expected to improve overnight as temperatures drop and humidity rises. However, authorities advise remaining vigilant and following local burn restrictions.
The NWS encourages residents to stay updated on fire conditions and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfire outbreaks. Emergency responders remain on high alert for any fire activity in the region.
